MS in the 21st Century (MS21) is an initiative that began in 2011, with a goal of redefining and standardising MS care and treatment globally.  Our Steering Group was formed, comprising of international MS experts (neurologists, pharmacoeconomists, MS nurses and psychologists), and in our initial meetings, we defined our mission statement, to enable ‘full access to personalised treatment, with reimbursement, to achieve freedom from disease’.

In 2016, recognising the importance of incorporating the patient voice into any work intended to impact patient quality of life, a corresponding patient Steering Group was formed, and MS21 became dedicated to improving standards of care for people with MS, with interesting results. Over the course of 2016, the group held a number of joint workshops, and it quickly became apparent that there are significant disparities between the opinions of patients and healthcare professionals on what are the most important unmet needs in MS care.

With this in mind, we changed our tack, and since 2016 our focus has been on improving education of, and communication between, healthcare professionals and people with MS. Now in our seventh year, the group has created a name for itself on the international congress scene, has created numerous resources, and published 3 peer-reviewed papers.

Meet the patient representatives

In 2016, the MS in the 21st Century Steering Group decided that incorporating the patient voice into their work was vital.
